Quiki Doodles

Haven't posted anything. The project was postponed (by me), and I'm still working on it. A little. I've been super busy.

I just wanted to post this doodle, though. Enjoy it!

Awesome Inks From Patrick!

I recently asked Patrick Sevc if he would mind helping me with the inks for Logan and Kenny. Here are some he sent to me today:

This one was super cool. I love the texture on Kenny's hat, and the question mark on it, too.

This one made me laugh. I love those colors.

And these are just my crappy, early drawings! I wonder what my decent drawings will look like inked.

Who Are Logan and Kenny?

'tsup? I'm John Michael, a.k.a. John Raay Spumkin. Normally, you'd see my sketches and stuff on my other blog, which you can click on the right. But, this is the blog of my creation, "Logan and Kenny", formerly "Logan and Slunchy", two characters who I made starting at 2006.

The idea of having two characters has been around since 2006, when I first drew a character named Jason. When I drew him, I was deep into Jhonen Vasquez, and kind of a closet emo (yeah, it's true). My idea for Jason was to have him go on mini killing sprees in an elementary school, and torturing bullies a la' "Johnny the Homicidal Maniac". I was a fucked up 6th grader, let's just say.

Over the years, I learned how to draw (kinda), and I got away from drawing in that style. For a few years, I did random drawings and characters and stuff, until 2008, when I thought about bringing back Jason...just not batshit crazy. And with a sidekick, a brother. His name was Slunchy, which I admit to taking from a Fillerbunny comic (still from Jhonen Vasquez. Bite me!)

My idea was now two brothers: one (Logan) was a complete asshole to the other (Slunchy), who was a complete imbecile. These two would torment each other and fight, but also go on some crazy convoluted adventure (including, but not limited to: scoring with redneck offspring, instructing the readers on fine dining, and becoming an awesome rock band the likes of which no man has seen wince the Beat Alls). My influences are obviously "Sam and Max", "Ren and Stimpy", and possibly "Malcolm In the Middle", and in those shows, you had the characters who played off of each other even while fighting a lot and breaking shit.

While redesigning, the characters, I came up with this sketch:

Obviously, this is nowhere near the design you see in the comics (or, depending on when you're reading this, the design you WILL see...), but a start's a start. I kinda used Sam from "Earthword Ho!" as a reference. I still do, and I'm kind of ashamed of it. I do have a redesign for him some time in the future...

When I thought of Kenny (which was back when I still called him Slunchy), I couldn't think of how to draw him. I started out with something like this:
And I kinda liked it. The hair was kind of a convoluted, terribly constructed mess.
I kept sketching him like this, and could never get the right design. For me, his hair was all fucked up.
Same here.

I drew this wanting a new design for Kenny, and since then, I've been calling him "Kenny". When I first drew him, I hated how I made his hair look. So, I thought I'd give him a poorly drawn beanie with different designs. This was the best design, and I've been drawing him like this since.
These were quick doodles of the two together. Notice Logan's new square head.
And this is Kenny making faces like Diseaseoid (look for "The Flagellants").
Another quick sketch of Kenny. I draw him a lot more because he has a whole lot of appeal to him, and it's so much easier.

When I started thinking of stories (which I'll put up here later), I reformatted Logan and Kenny (the name chosen because it has that same two syllable ring to it): Logan was no longer the asshole and Kenny wasn't completely retarded: the two kind of started playing off each other. Of course, as brothers, they were still fighting, but that makes for good comedy. This would fit better and I wouldn't have to typecast them.

As I draw them, notice how their design changes; if you see my blog, you'll realize that Logan and Kenny never have the same design the more I draw them. I got rid of Kenny and Logan's cheek, changed Logan's nose a bit, little tweaks like that. I even gave Kenny longer hair (not for an aesthetic reason, frankly it's because I can!). And the reason for this is that I'm constantly thinking of new ways to remake their designs so that it's easier and funner to draw. I really don't intend for there to be a final design. I'm having too much fun just drawing them and not sticking to a precise model.

And there you have it: that's how I thought of my characters, and maybe from here, I can start actually making some stories and comics.

Enjoy the blog.

And let it mellow, but only if yellow.

SUMMER / FALL 2009
